A NEW Poppy Appeal organiser is putting the final preparations in place for this year’s big drive as the town prepares to remember those who risked their lives for the country.
Judith Needham, of Kingstone, has taken the role as the Uttoxeter area Poppy Appeal organiser and is looking forward to a busy few months ahead of her.
The former owner of Waterloo House Catering and Restaurant is hoping this year will continue the success of the award-winning Poppy Appeal in the town over the last few years.
Mrs Needham said: “Poppy time is coming up and we are now getting the poppies ready for distribution.
“Hopefully everyone will support us once again, we are always looking for extra help to cover various locations.
“I have helped my daughter with the Poppy Appeal when she volunteered a few years ago and I have helped Barbara Tipper as well in the past.
“I am retired now so have the time to give my support to the charity. I have helped out with the charity over the years in various ways so I am quite familiar with the cause.
“I hope that we can do as well as they did last year and I hope everyone in the team will carry on doing the good work they always do.
“The distributors and collectors are so important. Some of them have been doing it for over 50 years and their support is premium. We could not do it without them.”
It has become a family affair as Mrs Leedham’s husband Cyrill and cousins Rhoda and Tony Ridout have lent a helping hand to the appeal.
Granddaughter Vickie, 18, has also been showing her support by helping out and doing a lot of the administrative work.
However, more volunteers who can offer some of their spare time are always welcomed.
Mrs Needham added: “We are looking for anyone who would be willing to offer a few days or even just a few hours.
“I would urge anyone looking for wreathes or wanting to help to get in touch.”
Plans for this year’s Poppy Appeal are already under way with the fund-raisers manning a stall outside Uttoxeter Town Hall on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays during Poppy Fortnight.
They will also be collecting at Uttoxeter Racecourse during the raceday on November 1.
