Music lovers enjoy an Evening of Jazz in town

Written byBY JENNY MOODY

UTTOXETER came alive with the sound of music as jazz musicians took to the stage.

An Evening of Jazz saw the Staffordshire Jazz Youth Orchestra (SYJO) and the jazz group of Oldfields Hall Middle School perform to the audience at Uttoxeter Town Hall, in High Street, at the weekend.

Uttoxeter mayor Martin Blencowe said: “It was superb, it went really well.

“The town hall was done out which added to the ambience and we tried to create a jazz club atmosphere which I think we succeeded at.

“I would like to say a big thank you to the town hall staff.

“The performance from the jazz group from Oldfields was exceptional, it was unbelievable for their age group.

“SYJO were to a very professional standard and the professionals there and the comments made said the same.

“It was a relaxing and very informal evening. It went down brilliantly.”

The SYJO is a collection of jazz musicians from across the county who are conducted by Nigel Beer, a senior lecturer in music and popular music at the University of Wolverhampton, and supported by Staffordshire Performing Arts.

They were brought to Uttoxeter by Councillor Blencowe after they attended a previous concert and felt it was something that needed to be brought to the town hall.

The jazz group from Oldfields Hall Middle School represented some of the town’s musical talent to help create the relaxed and enjoyable event.
