Mum's tribute to her 'shining star' killed in car crash

THE mother of a 23-year-old man who died in a car accident in Rocester has passed on the donations given at his funeral to the hospital department that battled to save him.

Former Thomas Alleyne’s High School student Stephen Hallam, from Mayfield, died a few days after his car left the road and hit a tree on the B5030 in November last year.

He was rushed to the Critical Care Unit at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in Stoke, having suffered serious injuries from which he failed to recover.

His mother Sue, who he lived with in Ashlea Drive, Mayfield, went back to the hospital to present a cheque for £700 to the unit, which was raised from donations made on the day of Stephen’s funeral.

Mrs Hallam said: “I would like to say thank you to my family and friends for all the love and support they have given to me since this sad time.

“I would like to say thank you to Stephen’s friends and everyone who came to Mayfield Church on December 6 and thank you for all the donations made to the critical care unit at North Staffs Hospital.

“I would also like to thank Graham and Eric Lee for their professional service, which could not be faulted, and also Rev Owen for the service at Mayfield Church and Deb at the bank for all her help.

Mrs Hallam has paid tribute to Stephen, a delivery driver who graduated from Thomas Alleyne’s High School in 2005, and described the effect his death had had on her.

She said: “Stephen was an amazing person, he would always be willing to help you if he was needed. He was like your guardian angel. My life has been turned upside down since that knock on the door in November.

“When I go to bed at night I lie awake and listen for his car coming home and the key in the door. I am finding it hard to come to terms with never seeing his beautiful, smiling face again. He is a really bright, shining star with a heart of gold. He was everyone’s friend and loved and missed by all.

“This has certainly broken my heart.”
