PUPILS at a Marchington school have been putting their pencils and paper aside to hone their acrobatic and performing skills.

Smallwood Manor Preparatory School played Big Top for the day as the Montana Circus put on a special circus skills workshop.

To start the day, the professional acrobats performed a dazzling display of leaps, tumbles and twists before amazing the children by demonstrating the tricks they had to learn by the end of the day.

Then it was the pupils turn to try their hands at performing tasks such as juggling, plate spinning, diablo to club balancing, lassos and stilt-walking.

Headteacher Mike Harrison said: “During the day, pupils had the chance to try a variety of different circus skills and practise their performances.

“While each session is designed to be great fun, there is a serious side. Each circus trick will help the pupils to develop motor-skills such as balance and hand-eye co-ordination as well as less obvious character traits such as patience and preservation.”
