UTTOXETER went monster raving loony over the weekend for a political party’s annual conference — so much so it will be returning next year.
The Monster Raving Loony Party took over the town last weekend parading through the streets and entertaining the locals in their merry way.
Such was the response from townsfolk not only will the conference return to the White Hart Hotel, in Carter Street, next year, but the party is actively seeking a representative to run for the Burton and Uttoxeter seat at the next General Election.
Party leader Alan ‘Howling Laud’ Hope told the Advertiser he has already had interest from one potential candidate and signed up 500 new members over the weekend.
“It was absolutely fantastic,” he said.
“Uttoxeter received us really well and people seemed to really enjoy themselves and the headline is we are coming back next year.
“We are looking for a candidate to run for the next election for the Burton and Uttoxeter seat as there is definitely a lot of support round here.
“When people heard we were from the loony party they said ‘well you’ve come to the right place!’ “The landlord and the staff at the White Hart were very helpful and great hosts. I think they thoroughly enjoyed it and so did all the other pubs in the town.
“We went around the other pubs and had some Morrismen put on some performances on Saturday afternoon.
“We also did a parade around the town playing music and some people were saying it was better than the Uttoxeter carnival — we were bringing the carnival atmosphere back.” Among the highlights of the event was the cabinet reshuffle where members went in a bedroom cabinet, shuffled around, and came out with a new role.
Mr Hope said the reshuffle was a success and in terms of new policies decided on at the event he said his memory was a little hazy.
He said: “The reshuffle was ever so much fun. We had a bedroom cabinet on its bottom and one lady said ‘how are you all going to fit in there’ but we did.
