Full house for village hall's talent show

A UTTOXETER dance act beat all comers to emerge as the victor in a village talent competition which helped raise nearly a £1,000 for the refurbishment of the show’s venue.

Rocester’s Got Talent was held at the village hall on Saturday night as part of the ongoing fund-raising drive by the hall’s committee.

The event, compeered by popular village vicar the Rev Kesh Govan, was a complete sell-out and people had to be turned away as it proved such a draw.

A total of 12 acts took to the stage to try to impress the judges and three acts emerged with the same points score to go through to the final.

Dance act 3D took the crown ahead of 18-year-old Rocester singer Brad Hammond in second and Rocester duo Tikeria Tikeria in third.

Chairman of the Rocester Village Hall committee and one of the talent show’s judges Jenny Hammond told the Advertiser it was a huge success.

She said: “It went amazingly well. My phone has not stopped since with people saying what a fantastic night it was and offering help for the future which is great.

“The event brought in 172 people and we could have sold another 80 tickets if we could have fitted them in.

“The winners were a dance act from Uttoxeter called 3D who just brought the house down and they won the £100 first prize.

“There was a wide variety of acts including comedians, singers and dancers and it showed how much talent there is in the area.” Mrs Hammond said it was safe to say the total raised would not be far off £1,000 which will go towards a new roof for the village hall.

She said: “When I became chairman of the committee about 15 months ago the village hall had lost its way quite a lot and it had fallen into some disrepair and villagers were not using it but that has been turned around.

“Saturday’s event was something that the whole village could come to and they really got behind it and the church and the pre-school also supported it making it a real community event.”

The next fund-raising event takes place at Rocester Village Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday, November 10 and will be a barn dance with a live band and caller, as well as lots of fun and a hot supper on offer.

Tickets are available by calling Mrs Hammond on 07976 784439 or from The Spar in High Street.
