DONNA Louise Children’s Hospice has been handed nearly £500 by organisers of a Christmas event last month in Checkley.
The Friends of Checkley Church and Checkley Church Social Committee combined to hold the event at the church in December raising over £460 for Donna Louise Children’s Hospice Trust.
The event was almost a victim of the terrible pre-Christmas weather but organisers rallied around to move the traditionally outdoor event inside.
Chairman of the Friends of Checkley Church, Brian Morley, told the Advertiser the night was a success despite the late change in plans.
He said: “The morning of the event we thought we would have to cancel it as the rain was torrential but we it went ahead inside the church.
“We had to cancel some things but managed to get most of it inside and it was quite successful in the end.
“We usually have carol singing and a barrel organ outside but we had to cancel that.
“We managed to get something out of nothing though really.
“There was a determination to get it on and people really came out and supported it despite the weather.”
Mr Morley said the group was happy to support Donna Louise Children’s Hospice which is a cause close to his heart.
He said: “We have supported Donna Louise for the last four years and must have raised over £2,000 now.
“It is a cause close to my heart and when we first talked about who we were going to support I suggested it.”
