UTTOXETER’S biggest high school could convert to an academy after it began a consultation process.
Thomas Alleyne’s High School, in Dove Bank, has invited the views of parents, guardians and interested individuals and organisations to comment on whether to transform the school into an academy.
Head teacher Suzanne O’Farrell and chair of governors Alison Trenery have written to all parents and carers of pupils to begin a consultation process
Mrs O’Farrell said: “Having been judged a good school with a number of outstanding features at its last OFSTED inspection, Thomas Alleyne’s High School and its governors are in a position to consider conversion to Academy Status.
“Given the many educational changes happening nationally, particularly in relation to how schools are organised, the governing body has been discussing how Thomas Alleyne’s can make sure that it can retain and secure its current ethos and individual nature, and build on its strengths in the future.
“It has considered all options carefully, taking into account both national and local issues. As a result it has taken the decision to consult with parents, staff and students on becoming a ‘Converter Academy’. This starts a process that allows the governors to determine whether it is in the school’s best interest to pursue this status.”
One of the key benefits of the status is the ability to adapt its curriculum to meet the needs of its pupils. Academies are free to opt out of delivering the National Curriculum. Thomas Alleyne’s wishes to be able to continue offering the curriculum it currently does, with greater flexibility if this would benefit pupils. The school would also welcome the opportunity to collaborate more creatively with other similar schools and with the feeder middle schools.
The Governing Body has begun the process to obtain the views of all interested groups including parents and carers, pupils, staff, first and middle schools, Staffordshire County Council and the MP.
The consultation will conclude on the February 25 and all views will be taken into account in reaching a decision at the end of February. Any other group or individual who would like to respond is invited to e-mail the school at email@example.com, or to send a letter marked Academy Proposal to Thomas Alleyne’s High School, Dove Bank, Uttoxeter, ST14 8DU.
