Action group set to tackle the 'Big Society' challenge

A UTTOXETER man has heeded David Camerons calls for a Big Society by setting up the towns very own community action group.

DAVE DENNYPrime Minister David Cameron launched his drive to empower communities earlier this month and said that groups should be able to run post offices, libraries, transport services and shape housing projects.

Now Dave Denny has set up the Uttoxeter Community Action Group and it holds its first meeting in the town next week to set up a committee and start making a difference in the town and surrounding areas.

Mr Denny (pictured right, who is also behind a group aimed at fighting back against the borough council’s parking policy, told The Advertiser why he has decided to set the group up.
He said: “I have been asked to get involved in many local issues recently and thought that it seems like a perfect time to set up a long missing group to tackle Uttoxeter issues at a community level.

“The community as a whole is becoming more militant and taking issues into their own hands (just look at all the single issue groups growing up recently and wanting change in many areas).

“A Uttoxeter Community Action Group, under the Big Society initiative, can now take some degree of control over shaping the future of Uttoxeter and the quality of lives and of course we can expect that we’ll get all the support we need from our Conservative town council, county councilors and the Tory-led ESBC.”
The group will formalise itself and elect a chair and officers at an inaugural meeting at the Heath Community Centre on Wednesday, August 4 at 6.30pm.

The second part of the meeting will look at pressing local issues and decide how to proceed.

The meeting will be chaired for the purposes of initiating the organisation by David Denny - all are welcome and nominations for all officers are being accepted at the meeting.

“One major and unresolved issue only yards from the Community Centre itself is the Old Milk Yard which is a haven for anti-social behaviour and drug abuse”, Mr Denny said.

“Despite repeated attempts to find a solution to the problem with the police and local councilors, nothing lasting has been achieved; and the problems are materialising again.

“Other items that have been suggested for attention are the unhealthy state of the Old Rec paddling pool, the lack of progress at the town hall rear and the lack of council support for playing fields at Stramshall.”
