ASDA to open in the town centre

SUPERMARKET giant Asda is to build a new store in the centre of Uttoxeter bringing hundreds of jobs, the Advertiser can exclusively reveal.

Asda joins Wilkinsons as the two flagship tenants for the project, along with a new health centre which has already been revealed as being part of the ambitious scheme.

Oliver Jones, property communications manager for ASDA, said: “We’re very pleased to confirm that we do have plans to bring ASDA’s famous low prices to Uttoxeter.

“A full public consultation will take place in due course, before we submit a planning application later in the year.

“ASDA has recently been named Britain’s favourite supermarket by the Grocer magazine and we hope potential customers will be excited by the prospect of us becoming part of the local community.

“We look forward to confirming more details in the near future.” Draft plans for the Carters Square scheme revealed by the Advertiser in November show two anchor tenants for the project and seven other smaller retail units.

The announcement by Asda also leaves room for another supermarket chain to be part of the JCB legacy development which has a food store as part of its plans.

Uttoxeter Mayor councillor Allan Chapman said Asda’s arrival was ‘fantastic news’ for the town.

He told the Advertiser: “It really is fantastic. This is what people have been wanting — a different supermarket to Tesco.

“It is really important that it will be in the centre of the town as well. I think people will be really happy with that.

“If we can get that in the centre of town it will definitely bring more people in and it would be more accessible for older people who can’t get down to Tesco easily.

“I hope that a Morrisons or another major brand will go down on the JCB site as well so there will be plenty of competition.” Councillor Richard Grosvenor, leader of East Staffordshire Borough Council, confirmed that Asda had been secured for the Carters Square development.

He said: “We can confirm that the developer, Lingfield, has secured Asda to anchor the new retail development at Carters Square, Uttoxeter.

“This strong established retail business will provide stability to the new shopping facility during these continuing difficult economic times.

“Around 75 per cent of the complex is now either signed or under offer. We hope that Asda will act as the magnet to draw serious interest into the remaining retail units over the coming months.” Helen Davies, owner of Helen Louise in Carter Street and chairman of the Uttoxeter Trade Forum, said she had some concerns about the news.

She said: “I’m a bit shocked that it’s going on the Carters Square site. I can’t see it being any bigger than the current Tesco’s as there just isn’t room.

“It is great that it is something different in the town but I would have a bit of concern that it is not going to very big as I think people in the town will really want the George at Asda clothing side as well.”
