WORKERS in Uttoxeter are being urged to join a new union body formed to stand up for their employment rights.
For the first time, trade union members in East Staffordshire have formed the East Staffordshire Trades Council to ‘stand up and fight against austerity’.
The council is headed up by father and son team Paul and William Walker, who are chairman and vice-chairman respectively.
The pair are hoping their ‘old-school socialist ideals’ will help members secure fair pay and working conditions where they are lacking.
Paul Walker, who was once on the national executive of the RMT union, said: “The NHS is being privatised, working people are suffering draconian austerity measures and the biggest squeeze on living standards since the 1870s all show that there is a need for resistance and a need to fight back.
“The formation of the trades council shows that we are organised and we are prepared to fight for working people across East Staffordshire.”
William Walker said: “I was brought up in a trade union household with old-school, socialist ideals about ensuring you look after people.
“This is all about collectivism and co-operation, working together in solidarity.
“I see a lot of workers being exploited by their employers in the UK today.
“The rise in zero hour contracts is testament to that.
“Every employee deserves a decent wage and reasonable working conditions and that’s not happening right now.
“It all stems from excessive austerity enforced by this Government that its victims did not cause.”
Mr Walker said he wanted the trades council to enforce the message that unions still have power, despite the popular view that they have steadily declined since the early 1990s.
He said: “I know first-hand that the RMT has won numerous battles to help workers get paid and treated properly.
“There are 10,000 union members in East Staffordshire and now we have an organised body across the board that will fight for trade union matters and things that will affect the community.”
