A CRÈCHE, dance studio and ‘reworked’ swimming pool will be part of Uttoxeter’s ‘attractive’ new leisure centre, council chiefs have revealed.

East Staffordshire Borough Council has announced that the new design of the redevelopment of Uttoxeter Leisure Centre has been ‘heavily influenced’ by stakeholders and user groups following consultations throughout 2012 and 2013.

The final design includes a new larger fitness suite, dance studio and crèche as well as a ‘hugely reworked’ swimming pool hall including spectator seating for up to 128 people.

The council has also revealed that after an extensive period of evaluation and assessment following a competitive tender exercise, Bowmer and Kirkland Ltd has now been appointed as the main contractor responsible for the redevelopment on the Oldfields Road site.

The contractors are expected on site by the end of January and the work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

During the redevelopment, council chiefs said the leisure centre will be continuing to offer customers access to a number of activities including both fitness facilities and exercise classes.

These will predominantly be taking place at Smallwood Manor Preparatory School as well as at JCB.

A swimming lesson programme and ‘casual’ swimming sessions are also on offer during this period.

The council has advised customers to contact the reception on 01889 562844 for further information.

Bernard Peters, the authority’s deputy leader for service commissioning, said: “I’m delighted that the main contractor has now been appointed for the redevelopment of the leisure centre and that work on the site will start at the end of the month.

“The council undertook an extensive consultation exercise to help influence the design of a new, modern and attractive leisure centre.

“This is a significant capital investment for the people of Uttoxeter and the surrounding areas.”
