RESIDENTS wanting to get into shape but fear joining clubs with committed athletes are being invited to join a running group specially designed for beginners.
Lisa Lancaster (pictured), of Greenacres Drive, Uttoxeter, is pulling on her running shoes and encouraging others to join her as she starts her free beginners group in the town, inviting anyone who wants to add a little exercise to their week.
The 41-year-old, who is a member of the Uttoxeter Road Runners, decided to start to group after completing a leadership course run by UK Athletics and hopes it will help others find a love of the exercise.
She told the Post and Times: “I wanted to be able to pass onto others the enjoyment that I get from running.
“For me running is not just about getting fitter, which I have done, it is about some me time where I can just be Lisa and not be a mum, wife or person at work. It clears my head and I now have a lot more energy.
“I started running when my brother said he would sponsor me £50 for Race for Life in 2007 and having done it for the last few years I just kept running.
“I was asked in the summer by an e-mail from Stafford Borough Council encouraging people to take part in a leadership course and it went from there.
“It is good for Uttoxeter Road Runners to have a beginners group as they can then join the main group if they want to. The beginners group is completely separate as I think people can find the main group quite intimidating when they are starting out. This group is all about the beginners.
“If you have got a pair of trainers and can walk then come along. No experience of running is needed at all.”
The group meets every Thursday at 7.30pm on the car park outside B&M Bargains and is open to all adults.
The mother-of-two, who works as a school business manager, added: “The plan is that with a bit of support everyone will be able to run and enjoy it within 12 weeks. We begin with walking and gradually build up during the evening.”
