UTTOXETER RFC stalwart Andrew Moult has been appointed as a second XV coach to help bring through the next generation of talent.

The former front row legend will be joined by ex-first XV coach Kelvin Edwards as the second string’s bosses for the remainder of the season.

The second XV had a very encouraging start to the season and sit in the top half of their league.

However, playing numbers have dwindled in recent weeks and the club is looking to rejuvenate the side.

“The second XV is vital to the club’s development and future — it has been the breeding ground for many first XV players as they move from youth to senior rugby,” said club director of rugby Don Hayes.

Lewis Bain, Paul Milward, Joshua Allen, Steve Woolley, Mike Davies, James Gill, Tom Sherrat, Ben Gallimore and Aaron Lakin are all players who have done apprenticeships in the second XV before becoming regular first-team players.

“Andrew and Kelvin are both vastly experienced within rugby,” said Hayes.

“Their organisation, determination and desire to win should be the catalyst for developing a successful and professional second XV.

“This is excellent news for senior rugby at the club.

“What they will bring is exactly what the 2nd XV has been lacking in recent times and we need all the senior members of the club to get behind them.

“This will not be an overnight turnaround and a lot of hard work must be put in by all.” Edwards was last involved as first XV coach for two seasons, 2006/07 and 2007/08, winning back-to-back Owen Cups, the second of which was Moult’s first as captain.

Moult went on to win a further Owen Cup as well as back-to-back league titles and reach the Midlands Cup Final in 2009/10.

The club is aiming to transfer this culture of success into the second XV, who currently sit in mid-table in Staffordshire C (North).

The club is urging new people to come and get involved at Oldfields.

They are also aiming to get former players back involved in a playing capacity.

“Also we are looking to recruit new players,” said Hayes. “No previous experience is required as full coaching will be provided.”

Anyone interested should contact Hayes on 07968589634. Further information is also available on the club’s website, www.uttoxeterrugby.co.uk.
