UTTOXETER’S main car park has again been causing problems for town shoppers after it took their money without then issuing the ticket.

Barry Turner contacted the Post and Times after he lost money to the Maltings car park ticket machine on Wednesday morning, the town’s busy market day.

The disgruntled shopper said this was not the first time that he had been left out of pocket due to a faulty machine and the end result saw just one parking machine working in the whole of the car park.

To add insult to his injury, he said there is no contact number on the machine so those with problems have to e-mail the council to report it which is not always possible when stuck in a car park.

Mr Turner said: “Yet again, on visiting Uttoxeter, we lost £2 in a useless parking meter in the Maltings car park.

“The meter was happily accepting £1 coins but not giving tickets out.

“Shortly after this, the meter we successfully obtained a ticket from gave up the ghost and stopped accepting coins at all, leaving just one working parking any meter for the entire car park.

“This is a regular occurrence at the Maltings with visitors either losing money or being unable to get a ticket at all.

“East Staffordshire Borough Council make the situation worse by informing their parking customers on each machine that if there are any problems, they can email East Staffordshire.

“There is no contact number on any of the meters or regulation boards.

“Quite how we are supposed to e-mail from a car park, I’m not sure.”

He added that as a result of the car parking charges, which no longer offer shoppers a short stay option, the town centre is now littered with the ‘illegally’ parked cars of the people not wanting to pay the price but nothing is being done to rectify the situation.

A council spokesman said the problem with the machines had been rectified as soon as the authority had been made aware of the situation.

He said: “Following notification that the ticketing machines at the Maltings car park were faulty, the council repaired two of the machines the same morning.

“The third faulty machine has been reported to our engineers as a part within the machine needs replacing.

“The council would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

The council has recently made Fairfield Road car park free for shoppers and businesses.
