Will the MP join the fight for a cattle market?

IN the paper: Farmers step up protests over milk prices, David Brookes who owns a farm at Lower Loxley said farmers had already demonstrated at Market Drayton and Morrisons.

However, they received a call from Morrisons, saying the store would put up their price by 6p a litre covering the cost of production.

Now I say to these supermarkets, why have you treated these farmers in this way? It is disgusting.

Farmers have sold their dairy herds, sold their farms — which their families have farmed for generations — and gone to bed not knowing what the next day would bring — how nice.

All because some clever people say you will take our price.

And to cap it all they are importing milk from Europe. Is this the reason they are trying to crush the farmer? I say to the farmers, the next meeting you have with the supermarkets, have it in a cowshed at 5am and let them see the conditions you and your families have to work in.

I am told that the contract for milk from the farm gate is for milk so what happens to the cream? The is an old saying — the cat that got the cream.

Do the supermarkets view it as a treat? The paper also showed a civic parade with the mayor but no members of the public watching.

There was also a photograph of another parade led by a cow. The farmers were marching but this time the public turned out to support them.

I say to the farmers the facts are on your side and you have proved your point but don’t give up I bet you slept better the night after the march knowing that the public joined in with you.

Some of your families have been household names for a good many years in Uttoxeter and you have not let those names or yourselves down.

MP Andrew Griffiths has aready raised the issue in Parliament by asking the Minister for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what steps are being taken to support the farming industry.

Would it be possible for the MP to help the farming community and the wider public of the town by getting the cattle market back in Uttoxeter? I have been in contact with East Staffordshire Borough Council over the years and all I get is ‘we are waiting for the lawyers to sign the papers.’ Staffordshire County Council said it wanted a roundabout putting in place.

The last response I got from ESBC — that plans were going through the planning committee.

There is only one cattle market in the whole of Staffordshire and it is disgusting for farmers to have to travel miles to sell their cattle.

Despite having the land he was promised taken off him Malcolm Barratt is still willing to build one.

The farmers and the public were promised a new one when the old one was sold.

This was the start of the decline of Uttoxeter and it is still going on . So Mr Griffiths could you please help us all?
