ORGANISERS of Uttoxeter’s annual bonfire and firework display were happy that the event went off with a bang after overcoming hurdles to make sure it went ahead.

The 38th annual event organised by the Uttoxeter Lions took place on the recreation ground next to Uttoxeter Leisure Centre and as always was well attended by townsfolk as it offers good value for money and a spectacular firework display.

However, poor weather throughout the year left many areas of the field waterlogged and an additional obstacle was also provided when new EU waste transfer rules put the appearance of a bonfire at the event at risk.

So after overcoming those problems Uttoxeter Lions spokesman Gary Hudson told the Advertiser they were delighted to be able to put on another good show.

He said: “We were really lucky with the weather and we had a lot of good feedback from people.

“The attendance wasn’t far off previous years and considering last year it fell on the fifth — in terms of paying customers through the gate we were only about 40 down which is pretty good.

“There was a suggestion at one stage that we would not be able to do it because of flooding and there was a genuine worry about the bonfire because of this new European legislation so we are happy that it all went ahead.

“We hope to have raised a few thousands pounds for local good causes and we got to give people a very decent firework display that was worth forking out for.”
