EACH time I read the Advertiser, the main subject of the council is trying to sort out market days.
Many years ago people came from near and far on Wednesday to attend the market.
In those days we had a cattle market with the farmers attending and the wives of the farmers doing a weekly shop the town was alive! At lunchtime the workers from Bamfords Ltd came through the town on bikes going home for dinner.
Later we had a steady decline, the council of the day decided to close the cattle market before any plans had been made to find an alternative site.
Instead of three markets why doesn’t the council make more of the fact that in 1252 Uttoxeter was granted a charter for the Wednesday market, held regularly from 1308.
Perhaps a market on Saturday could incorporate craft stalls etc?
