‘IT was a lovely surprise’ said a lucky Rocester woman after winning tickets to meet one of her favourite bands.
Jackie Spencer, of Riversfield Drive, has won a competition, run by the Advertiser and Uttoxeter Racecourse, to meet UB40 on Saturday as part of a race day at the Wood Lane course.
The 51-year-old, who will meet the band with her husband Gary, said: “I had no idea we would win it was such a surprise when I got that phonecall.
“We were thinking of going but I have recently been in hospital for an operation so it was hit or miss whether we would be able to make it. But now we will definitely be going.
“It has been a rough few months but we are getting to the end of it now and this has given me something to look forward to without a doubt. I have always liked UB40 and they are one of my favourite bands.”
Tickets for the gig will still be available on the gate on the day.
David MacDonald, racecourse executive director, said: “Ticket sales have gone fantastically well and the atmosphere will be electric. Local hotels and B&Bs have been sold out for weeks, we’ve got fans coming from all over the country. It’s bound to be a fantastic night.”
UB40’s drummer Jimmy Brown added: “It’s a different world for us and we have experienced it already at Newmarket. It’s awesome when you are there, the thunder of the hooves, the atmosphere.
“The racing itself gets people hyped up and I can understand why you would want extra entertainment after that when the lights go down.”
UB40 will take to the stage after the last race at 9.15pm. Gates will open on the day at 3.30pm, with the first race leaving the starting post at 5.35pm and last race at 8.50pm.
Tickets on the gate will be available for £30. More information on the UB40 Race Night is available at www.uttoxeter-racecourse.co.uk or by calling 01889 562561.
Due to a production error the incorrect picture of UB40 was published in the Advertiser last week. The UB40 appearing at Uttoxeter Racecourse will feature Duncan and Robin Campbell.
