A 60-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed for throwing a brick at a Uttoxeter Town Hall window.

James Glover, of no fixed address, yesterday admitted criminal damage when he smashed a cash machine at the Co-op and a window of the town hall in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Glover was initially fined by magistrates but was later jailed as he had no way of paying the fine.

After the offence he voluntarily went to the police station and told an officer what he had done.

Sarah Smith, prosecuting, said: "He was arrested and in interview he said he had been homeless since May 8, had no money and was eating out of bins. He saw a brick and decided to smash the cash machine a few times. He said he did it because he was frustrated at being homeless."

Glover, who represented himself, did not want to say anything in his defence.

Magistrate Lesley Gilman said: "You are jailed for 14 days because you are not residing at an address and there is no way for the money to be collected."
