Djokovic claims Mubadala title

Novak Djokovic successfully defended his Mubadala World Tennis Championship title on Saturday with a final victory over David Ferrer in Abu Dhabi.

Serbian Djokovic claimed a 7-5 6-2 win over Ferrer, who had beaten fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals, to take a third triumph at the event at Zayed Sports City.

Nadal responded from the defeat to beat Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 6-3 in the third-placed contest.

It was Djokovic's first tournament since linking up with new coach Boris Becker.

Former grand slam winner Becker was in the crowd to witness his new charge's impressive victory, and Djokovic hopes the success augurs well for what lies ahead in the new season.

"I'm very satisfied with the way I played and I always enjoy coming back here," Djokovic said.

"I have to say I'm really glad to have Boris joining our team.

"It's great we've started by winning this trophy here. Hopefully we can continue like this during the year."

Ferrer conceded he fell just short of Djokovic's high standard.

"It was tough," said Ferrer. "Congratulations to 'Nole', he deserved to win. It was a good week for me. With 'Nole', I need to do more. It's very difficult to beat him so good luck in 2014 to him."
