Carberry in line for T20 debut
Michael Carberry is set for a Twenty20 international debut against Australia after being included in England's 13-man squad for two matches at the end of this month.
Carberry, who has one Test cap to his name but none in the limited-overs formats, caught the eye this summer with an unbeaten century for Hampshire in their Friends Life t20 quarter-final victory over Lancashire.
The 32-year-old opener is the notable inclusion in a squad minus a rested Kevin Pietersen but to be led by regular T20 captain Stuart Broad.
If selected in the first of two matches, on August 29 and 31, Carberry will make his debut on his home ground. He is the only uncapped player in a squad containing just two players involved in the ongoing Investec Test series against Australia this summer, T20 captain Broad and fast bowler Steven Finn.
National selector Geoff Miller said: "With only eight international T20 matches until the ICC World T20 next April, this NatWest series is an important chance for players to show they are capable of performing well at this level.
"The two matches will also allow Ashley Giles and Stuart Broad an opportunity to look at a number of different options.
"This squad combines players with plenty of international experience with players who have impressed at domestic level and who deserve an opportunity to test themselves in an international environment against what will no doubt be a strong Australian side."
Yorkshireman Joe Root, who has not batted in either of his two international Twenty20s so far, was later named in the squad.
