STAFFORDSHIRE is making a significant contribution to national economic growth according to a county leader.

Leader of the county council Philip Atkins has applauded Staffordshire business as GDP grew by 0.8 per cent in the second quarter of 2014 with Staffordshire continuing to attract major investment, increase skills to provide better paid jobs and improve transport options.

Councillor Atkins said: "These figures are encouraging news and clear evidence that the long-term economic plan is working. These aren't just abstract numbers and academic predictions – they mean more jobs, more security for families and more business thriving in Staffordshire.

"News like this doesn't happen by accident. It is the product of the realistic assessments over the past four years – and more still the sacrifices and hard work of Staffordshire people complemented by the work we have done and are doing as a county council to unlock the potential here.

"We are at the heart of the country and have demonstrated we are a prime location for business. Staffordshire plays a significant part in national growth; this is reflected in our growth fund deal from the Government.

"The county council is supporting expansion for world leaders like JCB and is doing so through transport improvements.

"We are backing our ever growing number of small companies through the delivery of superfast broadband, loan fund, enterprise centres and business helpline.

"There can be no complacency though and the job is far from complete. We are continuing with work we are doing and the difficult decisions that need to be taken."
