A WELL-KNOWN face is set to take on the role of head teacher at a Uttoxeter middle school, as the current head teacher will retire at the end of this school year.
Carl Gliddon will be the new head teacher for Oldfields Hall Middle School when Nick Brown bids a fond farewell to the school at the end of next term.
The 44-year-old, who started his teaching career at Thomas Alleyne’s High School in 1995, said he is feeling ‘very positive’ about his fresh challenge.
He started out as a design and technology teacher after becoming interested in teaching through his role as a climbing instructor.
This took him a role as deputy head teacher of Thomas Alleyne’s, and then to a role as acting head teacher of Windsor Park Middle School giving him valuable middle school experience.
Most recently Mr Gliddon has worked as acting head teacher of Thomas Alleyne’s High School following the departure of Suzanne O’Farrell.
He said: “Experiencing the pyramid school system in Uttoxeter from all angles, from high school and middle school gave me the drive to apply for the role.
“My new role will involve building on the strengths of the school – Oldfields pupils have a good sense of independence when they leave the school and an enquiring mind.
“I want to build on what they already have and effectively equip the pupils for high school study.
“I have a strong team of quality staff behind me and I am looking forward to working with teachers and pupils.
“I first got interested in teaching as I was a climbing instructor and got a lot from it.
“Before that I was a furniture designer, which gave me a starting point into my teaching career – with design and technology.
“It runs in the family too, my father was a head teacher and my mother was a teacher – a lot of Gliddons have been teachers.”
Nick Brown, current head teacher at Oldfields said: “Following a comprehensive selection process with an excellent field of candidates, the School Governing Body decided that Carl Gliddon, who is currently acting headteacher at Thomas Alleyne’s High School, will take over as head teacher of Oldfields Hall Middle School from September 2014 after I retire.
“I shall work very closely with Mr Gliddon and school staff here to ensure a smooth handover.”
