A TEAM of cycling enthusiasts are set to take on a gruelling route through the Uttoxeter countryside alongside injured ex-servicemen.

‘Team Sapper’, a team of ex-Royal Engineers, alongside employees from environmental building services Couch Perry and Wilkes will be embarking on their epic 50-mile journey this Sunday to raise funds for Help For Heroes.

The route which will head through Marchington, Kingstone and Abbots Bromley will involve ex-’Sappers’ and ex-Royal Navy servicemen.

Simon Seaton-Smith, of Couch Perry and Wilkes co-ordinated the ride.

He said: “I lived and grew up in and around Abbots Bromley.

“My grandad who sadly passed away recently was a war time Sapper and Royal Engineer decorated in three major campaigns during the second World War.

“I became involved with the Sappers when meeting them on a Big Battlefield Bike Ride through France in 2012 in support of Help For Heroes, riding 350 miles and being welcomed into Team Sapper during emotional times.

“Since joining the team we have raised over £30,000 for Help For Heroes and now regularly participate in challenging events for this fantastic charity.

“The team have now raised over £250,000.

“The East Staffordshire countryside is my ‘back yard’ - the best countryside in England, and where better to stage a tough cycle ride in our mission to raise awareness and much-needed sponsorship in support of wounded service men and women who need life long treatment provided by Help For Heroes.”

Funds raised will support Team Battle Back, who work in partnership with Help For Heroes, providing adaptive adventure training and sports rehabilitation to help seriously wounded service personnel gain independence and confidence.

He added: “We are very grateful to ‘Team Sapper’ for allowing Couch Perry Wilkes to join their fundraising efforts and experience the enthusiastic drive to support such a worthy cause.” Those wishing to donate should visit: www.bmycharity.com/teamsapper
