THE new first citizen of East Staffordshire has spoken of his ‘pride’ at being handed the chance to represent the area as its new mayor.

Veteran Labour councillor Ron Clarke revealed that he was already hard at work in his new role as the Mayor of East Staffordshire, and is relishing being able to support good causes and organisations from across the area.

The Eton ward councillor was officially handed his chains at the mayor-making ceremony at Burton Town Hall on Friday night, where Bill Ganley, borough councillor for Shobnall, was also named as deputy mayor.

The 74-year-old said: “I am absolutely delighted to take on the role of Mayor of East Staffordshire.

“I feel an immense pride at being able to represent the area and offer support to groups, charities and organisations during the next 12 months.

“At a time when a lot of people are still feeling the pinch, I hope the work that I do can help them out and improve things for people in East Staffordshire.

“During my year in the role, I am looking to help out any good cause that needs assistance, but I have chosen three causes close to my heart that will be my chosen charities.

“First up is Cancer Research UK. I myself have battled prostate cancer and want to help this group so that, hopefully, we can one day find a cure for all cancers.

“My second choice is mental health support group Changes.”
