Ford announces changes to the ever-popular Focus

Written byGARETH BUTTERFIELD

FORD has announced a host of revisions to one of the nation’s favourite cars, the Ford Focus.

A new look, new engines, stiffer chassis and a new selection of technologies will be added to the new version, which is due to be unveiled at the Geneva Motorshow.

The revised engine line-up includes a new 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engine and new 1.5-litre TDCi diesel engine.

The units bring with them the promise of improved fuel economy over the current model and, along with the efficiency upgrades, changes have been made to its clever 1.0 litre EcoBoost model that bring CO2 emmissions down to a tax-busting 99 g/km.

The new focus will also include an upgraded in-car connectivity infotainment system that features a high-resolution colour touch screen and advanced voice control for easier access to audio, navigation, climate control and mobile phones.

The self-parking system that arrived in the last upgrade has been played with and now offers a new hands-free ‘Perpendicular Parking’ technology, which helps drivers reverse into spaces side-to-side with other cars.

Safety features that have been improved for the new model include a better Active City Stop braking system which now keeps watch at speeds of up to 50 km/h.

The new Focus should also drive better than its predecessor, with a stiffer front end allied to revised suspension, retuned shock absorbers, electric power steering and a new electronic Stability Programme.

A few new exterior colours have been added to the palette, including ‘Deep Impact Blue’ and ‘Glace Blue’, and the new Focus has a lower, wider stance, with a new bonnet, front fascia and grille.

The bonnet is sculpted from the front pillar to the corners of the upper part of the inverted trapezoid grille.

The new version of the car that has found itself nearly seven million buyers in Europe is due to go on sale from the second half of 2014
