Dr Johnson set to be marked in the town centre

THE date of the annual ceremony remembering the inventor of the dictionary has been revealed.

The ceremony to commemorate the anniversary of the birth of Doctor Samuel Johnson and his act of penance, where he stood in the rain for not helping his father's book stall in the town, will be held in the Market Square, Uttoxeter, from 11am on Monday, September 22.

The guest speaker will be Professor Jock Murray, who is the president of the Dr Johnson Society.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in St Mary's Church.
