A POPULAR Uttoxeter ice cream maker has proved one scoop is really not enough after bagging two awards at a prestigious contest.
J R Ashmore and Son won two awards at The National Ice Cream Competition, run by The Ice Cream Alliance (ICA) – the trade body for the UK’s £1 billion ice cream industry.
The ice cream specialist won the silver medal in the Mobiler of the Year class, reaching a top position against strong competition from entries from across the UK and Ireland.
However, this was not the teams only success, as they also won first place in the Mini Artistic Class Silver Challenge Cup for a ‘delightful and detailed’ ice cream cake based on a theme of traditional children’s toys.
John Ashmore, who is head of the business, said “It has always been a tradition, since my grandfather Len started up with a bicycle and a refrigerated box, to taste every batch of ice cream, his theory being that if it wasn’t good enough for him to eat, it wasn’t good enough for the customers and we still do that today,
”I was always interested in art at school, and this certainly gives me an outlet to express my creative side.
“Our ‘large artistic’ won a bronze medal in last year’s competition and we have been awarded silvers and more than 120 diplomas in a range of classes over the years.
“A double this year, however, is the icing on the cake, you might say.”
From its very beginnings in 1932, J R Ashmore and Son has made all its own ice cream for its mobile business, with a strong emphasis on quality and consistency.
The business moved to its current base at Cremona in Park Street in 1935 and has been a member of the ICA for 68 years.
It attends more than 250 local shows, caters for weddings, parties and galas and the whole Ashmore family is involved. Mr Ashmore started working on ice cream vans at 13 and after leaving school was driving a van as soon as he passed his test.
He said winning the Ice Cream Alliance awards would boost the firm’s already excellent reputation not only with local residents but also and importantly with show and festival organisers.
