UTTOXETER RFC director of rugby Donald Hayes has labelled his side’s 45-8 defeat to Handsworth as the “worst performance of the season”.

Hayes’ side were heavily beaten in appalling conditions at the weekend in one of the few local sporting encounters to survive the weather.

However, despite the defeat in Midlands Three West (North), the Town boss saw a silver lining among the storm clouds.

He said: “We can take a positive in that we were still able to create chances.

“Had we had the presence of mind and the technical sharpness we are capable off, then we could have put these opportunities away.

“Plenty of tries were there for the taking, and the one try we did score was pleasing as it was a result of great team play.”

Uttoxeter’s profligacy came back to haunt them as they conceded 26 points in the second half of the game.

“We deteriorated so much that by the end of that match we were completely unrecognisable from the way in which we started,” said Hayes.

“This was by far the worst performance of the season so far from us, and despite the fact that we had a great energetic start, we stalled.

“We were missing first up tackles, we looked unfit and low on energy.

“The application to training needs to improve, the players need to train in numbers and need to take a more responsible approach to their own fitness.

“We are currently in a reasonably safe position in the league, so I will begin showing considerable favour to players who show the commitment to training, regardless of ability.”
