TWO villages surrounding Uttoxeter have been recognised for their beauty and the dedication of the residents after being crowned a Best Kept Village.
Denstone has been declared the best overall village in East Staffordshire after the Community Council of Staffordshire revealed the Best Kept Village Competition results for 2014.
The village was also the winner in the best small village category with Abbots Bromley taking the award for the best large village.
Both villages also won special commendations for competing in the competition for more than 50 years.
Caroline Vernon, chairman of Denstone Parish Council, said: “We are all really pleased about it and we also won a special commendation for taking part in the Best Kept Village for more than 50 years and we have now been doing it for 55 years.
“People in the village have been really thrilled with the award and we have a good team including Pauline and John Jilbert who take care of the village gardens and war memorial and we have had a new length man Sam Bailey who took over just before the start of judging.
“Everyone has really worked all together and we have had a lot of volunteers from the village doing their bit – there are too many to mention but they know who they are.
“Everyone has really got together as a team to pull it together and I am really proud of them.
“It has been around six years since we won the top spot but the village has always been placed. It is lovely to win it.
“The village looks marvellous all the time but everyone did an extra special job this year and we hope to continue this in the future.
“I would like to thank everybody that has made the effort with their gardens and to keep the village looking overall tidy all to make the village look good. Denstone really is a lovely place to live.”
Roger Jarman, chairman of Abbots Bromley Parish Council, said that the village looks its best all year round but a special effort is made for when the judges take their tour.
He told the Advertiser: “It is very good news and it is nice for all the people who worked hard to keep the village looking attractive. People have put a lot of effort into making their window boxes and hanging baskets look attractive and it looks wonderful.
“We also got the special commendation for taking part for 50 years which is again excellent. We have only just found out about winning so not many people know yet but I know that people will be really pleased because the village does look good and it is nice to be recognised.
“I would like to say a big thank you as when you look at the hanging baskets and window boxes they do look absolutely superb as we don’t tend to have many front gardens in Abbots Bromley.
“I think the village does tend to look superb all year round as people do make the effort, not just for Best Kept Village but all the time.”
