AN AMATEUR dramatics society is set to tread the boards once more after a three-year hiatus - and is looking for new members to act in its productions.

After 20 years of entertaining villagers, the Denstone Players was forced to disband when several key members moved away from the area.

But the Players are now set to get back together with a view to putting on a pantomime in January.

Also in the pipeline are two one-act plays, which are being scheduled in for July.

Sound and lighting expert Peter Smith joined the Players when he was just 16.

Now, 17 years on from when he joined the team, he is excited at the prospect of being back in action.

He said: “We held a meeting on Monday and we’re going to start it up again but we need more members to ensure that can happen.

“We haven’t done anything for three years and I’ve really missed the amazing atmosphere we’d built up between members of the team.

“It’s so enjoyable to put shows on for the community and we always used to get full houses without fail.”

Mr Smith said his work in the back-stage crew with the Players had spurred him on in his career.

And he is now entertainments technician for Alton Towers.

He said: “I’d always wanted to be involved in sound, lighting and special effects.

“And the Players gave me the opportunity to experience it in my teens, which was invaluable.”

The Players ‘don’t take things too seriously’ and usually produce pantomimes, comedies and variety shows.

Among the productions they have put on in the past are pantos Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella and farcical comedies Murdered to Death and It Runs in the Family.

Aspiring amateur actors of all ages are being sought, including children.

Mr Smith said: “I can say first-hand that joining the players is a really valuable experience for youngsters.

“It helps them develop social skills and become part of a team, as well as giving them practical acting experience.”

Anyone interested in joining is invited to an open meeting on April 27 and an AGM on May 18, during which auditions will be held, at 7pm at Denstone Village Hall.
