CYCLING enthusiasts in Uttoxeter have registered with a national sporting body and are looking forward to an ‘extremely exciting’ year.
The Uttoxeter Cycling Club which meets every Sunday has officially registered with British Cycling marking the start of the club’s ‘most exciting year yet.’
Joanne Clowes, press officer for the Uttoxeter Cycling Club said: “We’ve now been recognised officially by British Cycling which is a real step forward for the club.
“We have recruited more than 50 members during the past year which demonstrates the level of demand for group cycling in Uttoxeter.
“Plans for the coming year include a sportive in the summer which is a long distance bike ride that everyone can take part in.
“It’s really exciting for the club and we expect this event to attract a lot of different people from clubs outside of Uttoxeter.
“The unique thing about the Uttoxeter Cycling Club is that it is very inclusive and open to everyone.
“We are a very family-friendly club and welcome mums, dads and children to come along and take part, as well as competitive cyclists, as we have a selection of routes for different cycling abilities.
“It’s very open to both men and women - as a female rider I felt very welcome from the beginning.
“Following the official recognition of the club with British Cycling, we decided to form the Uttoxeter Cycling Club committee and hold regular meetings to organise the club calendar.
“We’re also in talks with local businesses about the possibility of getting them to offer deals to our members.
“We have got the Dapple Grey on board so far who will offer 20 per cent off to all our members.
“We’re very much in the first stages at the moment as we have only just registered officially with British Cycling but we have big plans for 2014.
“The future for the new club is looking extremely positive and exciting.”
Olda Novak, chairman of the club said: “I feel very pleased that cycling is becoming much more popular in town.
“Our cycling club has grown immensely in the past year and we now have up to 40 to 50 riders who are going out regularly on a Sunday.
“2013 was a good year for the club and I am positive that 2014 will be even better.
“In 2014 we would like to do more of the events which were so successful last year and further promote cycling in and around Uttoxeter.
“We believe that local council and government will be proud and supportive of such a great community development here as well.”
