A RUNNING club for beginners wanting to take their first steps to becoming fitter has already seen members 'graduate' – only six months after opening its doors.

Uttoxeter Beginners Running Group was started by Lisa Lancaster, of Greenacres Drive, back in February, for people who did not feel confident enough to join the Uttoxeter Road Runners or who just wanted to get themselves in shape.

Many of the runners graduated from the first beginners classes by completing the JCB Lakeside 5, while others who did not compete still went along to cheer them on.

Following the success of the first sessions, with participants now meeting up on their own to go on runs, a new beginners group is set to start in January 2015.

The new sessions will be held at the new Uttoxeter Leisure Centre, in Oldfields Road, from 7pm on Thursdays and will be aimed at complete beginners wanting to give running a go.

Mother-of-two Lisa told the Post and Times: "All of them ran JCB Lakeside 5 fantastically well, despite it being one of the hottest evenings of the year, and all managed to complete the five miles in well under an hour.

"Many of the beginners are now keeping going with their runs, some have joined Uttoxeter Road Runners, and some are planning to join when I return in September, they are still meeting regularly for runs and fitness sessions.

"Two of the beginners have already signed up to do half and full marathons in the next 12 months, and many of the others are already signed up for 10k and other races in the autumn.

" All these achievements have been as a result of their commitment and the support of their families, Danny Carter, Liz Goodwin and myself.

"Danny and Liz helped with the beginners group, taking over for two weeks when I had a bad fall in March, and helping with the different abilities."

The runner decided to set up the group after she completed a leadership course which was run by UK Athletics and hopes it will help others find a love of the exercise.

Before the club's new season starts, Lisa has her own challenge to train for as she prepares for her autumn marathon in York.

To help make sure she is ready for the big day, her first year graduates returned the support and are already on hand to help her get ready for the long distance runs.
