THE sounds of Zydeco music will provide the entertainment at the Doveridge Village Club’s Christmas Party event next weekend.

The Zydeco Hot Rods were formed nearly 20 years ago by keyboard player Good Rockin’ Dave, who is also one of the top British players of the Zydeco Accordion and whose style owes much to the true creator of Zydeco, the late great Clifton Chenier.

This dance music from Louisiana, known as Zydeco, is sometimes sung in Cajun French but is so close to Rock’n’Roll and Rhythm and Blues, that when the band kicks in you can hardly see the join.

Songs by Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Fats Domino, Big Joe Williams, Washboard Sam, Sticks Maghee, Little Richard, Muddy Waters and Jimmy Reed will be featured alongside Zydeco classics by Clifton Chenier, Bobby Charles, Lynn August, and Rockin’ Sidney’s ‘Don’t Mess With My Toot-toot’ which was recorded by Denise Lesalle and made the number one spot in the UK back in the 1980s.

The band is also renowned for its swamp pop versions of 1960s songs by a variety of acts including Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, The Animals and even Cliff Richard’s ‘Do You Wanna Dance’ which fits neatly into the this mould.

Following the successful format of last year’s party the four-piece are once again expanding into The Zydeco Hot 7 with the addition of the Vice-Bishops’ twin guitarists Dave Faulkner and Pod Malkin and once again in true Zydeco tradition, with Fred’s son Ed Hopwood completing the line up on harmonica, drums and washboard.

Closely affiliated with Smalltown Music, many of the musicians in the Zydeco Hot 7 line-up have been taking to the stage since the 1960s, taking a journey through various bands and configurations of musicians on the Uttoxeter and Doveridge music scene, including the Zydeco Hot Rods and the Vice-Bishops Blues Band,

Smalltown Music is the home of Fred Hopwood and Dave Blant, two multi-instrumentalists who have been active on the music scene all over Europe throughout the last 25 years .

Tickets for the Christmas Party With The Zydeco Hot 7 on Saturday, December 22 at 8.30pm are available in advance at only £5 and more information is available by telephoning 01889 562123.

Tickets on the door are £6.
