A MUSICIAN is holding a charity concert in memory of his friend who recently lost his brave battle with cancer.

Mark Robinson, of Marchington, was due to perform in a fund-raising concert with his friend, Tim Averill, which will raise money for Burton’s Queen’s Hospital’s cancer care unit, but sadly his friend died before he could take to the stage.

However, Mr Robinson, a semi-professional musician, has said the show must go on and will hold the event, which pays homage to the songs of John Denver, in memory of his friend.

Mr Averill, from Abbots Bromley, was also a musician and decided to hold the concert to raise money for the hospital because of the care he received from staff after being diagnosed with bowel cancer just last year.

Mr Robinson, a singer/songwriter who has performed all over the world, said: “It was awful. He had all the chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Tim and I decided that after all the good care he received he wanted to give something back.

“It is really difficult to keep someone’s spirits and hope up but the caring staff did. They have done so much for him.

“Tim was to be one of the performers at this show on December 8; sadly he passed away on Wednesday, November 6, so I have to hold the torch for him.

“Tim would have brought quite a few people with him, but now that is not going to happen and we really want to sell out to raise as much as possible.” The music will primarily include the songs of John Denver, with a strong festive theme, but will include some original songs and one or two others.

All of the proceeds from the ticket sales, raffle and licensed bar will be split 50-50 between the Cancer Care Unit at Queen’s Hospital, and the Marchington Village Hall Development Fund.

The concert will take place at Marchington Village Hall, The Square, near Uttoxeter, on Saturday, December 8, from 7.30pm.

Mr Robinson, who has taken part in the annual John Denver celebrations in Aspen, Colorado, hopes to be joined by guests on stage.

Tickets can be bought by phoning Mark Robinson on 07411 377282, from Marchington Village Shop, or by emailing mark@markrobinsonmusic.com
