A FASHION professional who has worked with M&S and Asda is settling in to a new shop in Denstone, selling hand-painted furniture, soft furnishings and interiors.
Louise Housley, 43, is balancing her new business, Martha’s Attic, with her part-time job as a merchandiser and web designer - but she still finds time to keep her shop fully stocked.
She has moved into one of the newly-created units at Denstone Farm Shop to display and sell her restored and hand-painted furniture, a spin-off business that developed from her soft furnishing company, Housley and Co.
Selling online and at fairs, her soft furnishings were displayed on ‘upcycled’ furniture and, when customers started asking to buy the display furniture as much as the soft furnishings, she spotted a new business opportunity.
Martha’s Attic, which has provided a new platform for her bespoke painted furniture, is now open from Wednesday until Sunday at the farm shop, which recently expanded to make room for other small businesses.
Each piece of furniture at Martha’s Attic is completely unique, and new stock is being created all the time from items found at antiques fairs and auctions.
Ms Housley said she wanted to move away from the ‘mass-produced’ look and has recognised a demand for unique home furnishings.
She said: “I’ve been in the fashion industry for years, designing and buying for big companies including George at Asda.
“I wanted to do something a little more unique and so I set up my business Housely and Co to design soft furnishings.
“I’m now offering interiors, hand-painted furniture and handmade soft furnishings.
“My pieces are all individual, all quality furniture which has been hand-painted or stencilled.
“I offer advice on interiors and people sometimes bring in their own pieces to be re-decorated.
“In my career with big companies I had to get used to buying things in bulk quantities and getting low prices.
“Now it’s like it’s the opposite way around, I take pleasure in creating unique items for homes where people are looking for something a little bit different.
“I have always got a project on the go.”
Those wishing to buy a piece of furniture are advised to drop into the shop at Denstone Farm Shop as due to each piece being unique, shop stock is constantly changing.
Updates on products are posted regularly on the Martha’s Attic Facebook page.
