Husband and wife team opt to work for themselves

Written byby Jenny Moody

A NEW cafè has opened its doors in Marchington as a husband and wife team decide to set up their own business.

David Richards and his wife Angela have opened Stubby Lane Diner, at unit 14 on Marchington Industrial Estate, which was formerly Bob and Dawn’s Cafè, offering the traditional cooked breakfast as well as healthier baguettes.

Mr Richards explained they decided to go it alone after he was laid off from Birmingham Metropolitan College where he worked as an assessor and struggled to find work in the same field.

The 49-year-old, who currently lives in Birmingham, said: “I thought it was time to work for somebody else and the only person I could think of was me.

“We chose Marchington as the industrial estate is huge and is only 40 per cent used so has the possibility of turning around.

“I am enjoying it. I have got too old to be rushing about so we would like to move from where we are now and we are thinking of moving to the Uttoxeter area.

“Our two daughters have grown up and moved out so it is time to do something for ourselves.

With my wife Angela by my side we are going to run it together. It is a big change for us.” Having only been open for three weeks, so far the business has been steadily growing, and the owners have also been delivering to some of the local businesses.

The cafè has 18 seats and is offering healthier options for the more health conscious as well the fried food.

The father-of-two, who has three grandchildren, added: “It is for the benefit of the local people as they can sit and have a chat with a baguette or bacon and egg.

“We are not totally relying on the estate itself as the B5017 is a main route between Uttoxeter and Burton and the surrounding villages so we are hoping it could have an impact on the local population.”

Mr Richards is not the only member of his family to take a liking to the town as his brother Gary and wife Vicky also moved to Uttoxeter a few months ago for a similar reason after getting fed up with the city.
