BUSINESS chiefs in East Staffordshire have expressed their delight after a huge improvement in the fortunes of companies across the area in 2014 was predicted.

New statistics from the Burton & District Chamber of Commerce, which covers Uttoxeter, have shown an upward trend in both home and overseas trade across all sectors and forecast that economic recovery is gathering pace.

But despite the positive news, firms in East Staffordshire have issued a plea for skilled and technical workers after admitting they were struggling to fill vacancies.

Uttoxeter’s MP Andrew Griffiths said: “This news is great to hear, especially after so many people in the town have put in so much work to try to turn the economy around.

“The fact that businesses have entered 2014 with such a positive outlook is fantastic and this can only be built on to try to make sure the next 12 months produce the success that we all hope for.

“The buoyant feelings show confidence in the economy and what the Government is doing to help firms of all shapes and sizes to prosper.

“This is even better when it is coupled with recent news that the town has reached the lowest level of unemployment since June 2008.

“What is needed now is a continuation of this hard work so that the facts and figures turn into physical business success in 2014.”

Chris Plant, Burton and District Chamber director, said: “The upward trend in the fortunes of the region’s businesses is hugely encouraging for 2014.

“And the easing of unemployment in the region is great news, but these figures could come down further. There are jobs out there for people who are prepared to train again and the chamber is working hard with further education institutions to re-train people.

“We have reasons to be optimistic as the recovery becomes more sustainable in 2014. However, this should not be taken for granted and we will not be complacent.”
