THREE men have been arrested following two incidents in Tean and Alton, one from Burton and two from Uttoxeter.
Two men claiming to have firearms attempted to rob the Grove House post office in Alton at roughly 6.20pm last night.
Nearly 20 minutes later two men entered the Co-Op supermarket in Tean, where two offenders, at least one of whom was wielding a knife, stole money from the shop.
Staff members were not injured in either incident, but are believed to be badly shaken by their ordeals.
Staffordshire Police enquiries led officers to an address on Ash Close in Uttoxeter, and after hours of negotiation the force confirmed three men had been taken into custody for questioning.
A statement issued by the force said: “A detailed investigation into the events of this evening is already underway.
“The three men arrested in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday, remain in police custody.
“They are a 20-year-old man from Burton and a 36 and 37-year-old, both from Uttoxeter.
