AN ARMED robber who attempted to steal from a town building society while threatening staff at knifepoint was arrested in Uttoxeter.

Staffordshire Police were called out to the attempted robbery at Leek United Building Society in Market Place just after 2pm on Wednesday.

Andrew Glover, 60, of no fixed address, was later arrested outside the town's library.

He appeared before Burton Magistrates Court yesterday charged with attempted robbery and possession of a knife blade or sharp pointed object in a public place.

Glover did not enter a plea and is being kept in custody in Stafford until his hearing at Stafford Crown Court on September 22.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: "The alarm was raised just after 2pm by the building society. A male offender had entered the premises and threatened staff with a knife.

"Patrols then began an area search."

Anyone with any further information is being urged to contact Staffordshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 340 of August 22.

Alternatively they can contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

The attempted robbery is one of three serious crimes in the Uttoxeter area over the last few days – see pages 2 and 5 for more.
